Hiragana Basics

So we already learnt a little about Hiragana in lesson 1 but now we should learn a little more about some of the rules.

First of all you need to know about dakutens. these little dashes completely transform the sound
K->G S->Z T->D H->B
for instance this is ka and ga. as you can see the only difference is the dakuten.

There are also  handakutens which are used to turn a H->P for instance ha to pa  は -> ぱ

The next rule you should learn is about 'Digraphs' this is where a small Y sound (ya, yo, yu) transforms a hiragana into a new sound.
The transformation occurs for

き し ち に ひ み り

for instance き (ki) becomes きゃ (kya)

It should also be known if a small tsu sound つ it will double the first letter of the next hiragana.

That's all you need to know for now!

Today is May 3rd or in Japan 憲法記念日 Kenpō Kinenbi. This is Constitution Memorial Day and is apart of Golden Week. It is a day where people celebrate the Constitution of Japan and think about democracy.

Since in Japan if two holidays have a day between them that day also becomes a holiday so on the 4th there is also a holiday since the 5th is こどもの日 Kodomo no Hi which is Children's day (also known as boy's day).
This holiday is also celebrated in  China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Korea.

This Celebration takes place right at the start of the summer. The day has become dedicated to the appreciation of children and mothers.

Traditionally families would raise one carp shaped flag for everyone of their children. This comes from an old Chinese legend of a carp swimming upstream and becoming a dragon.

Traditionally Mochi is eaten as a sweet treat on this day.

Today is the 29th of April which in Japan is the start of Golden week. Golden week is a succession of  holidays which (if you include the weekends) is one of the longest holidays in the whole year! Today we are going to learn all about Shōwa Day and it's origins so stay tuned to Smiletalk for everything about it!

The first day you celebrate

天皇誕生日 Tennō Tanjōbi
which is the Emperor's birthday.
Which Emperor?  Emperor Akihito of course who was born in 1933.

This day later evolved into what is now known as みどりの日 Midori no Hi which is Greenery Day (not to be mistaken for the band GreenDay). It is mildly similiar to the western celebration 'Earth Day'. Greenery day is a day for communing with nature and being thankful for what it gives us. The Emperor was known for his love of nature so it seemed appropriate to have a day that both honored him and nature.
Isn't Japanese History Fascinating?
If you enjoy it you should check out the Facebook
for all sorts of tidbits of Japanese History!

The day then evolved once more to 昭和の日 Shōwa no Hi or as we know it Shōwa Day.
This day honors the birthday of the Shōwa Emperor and exists to remind people to look back on his reign. This is only the first day Of golden week!

When I try to remember Kanji I link them with
something in my language. For instance 'sora' is sky
when I see it I think of Sora from 'Kingdom Hearts'
Find something to associate with a kanji
and it will be easier to learn!
